Meet your School Counselors

Jake Tapley

About Me

I was born and raised in Millbury, Ohio where I attended Lake High School.  I have lived in the greater Toledo area for almost my entire life, and my wife and I currently live in Waterville, Ohio.  In my spare time, I enjoy playing golf, watching movies, and playing games with my daughter.  For the last two years, I have been a school counselor at Bowling Green Middle School.  Prior to that, I worked in various roles in the juvenile justice system, including juvenile probation officer and youth advisor.  I am also the varsity boys golf coach at Maumee High School.

Education

After high school, I attended The Ohio State University and received a bachelors degree in Criminology in 2009.  After working in the field for a couple years, I decided to begin my graduate program in school counseling at Bowling Green State University, where I graduated in 2015.  Throughout my graduate program, I was a member of Chi Sigma Iota - Beta Gamma chapter.

Counseling Experiences

As a school counselor, I provide direct services to students in the form of individual and group counseling, as well as classroom lessons.  My focus is to assist students with personal, social, and academic growth and development.  I also provide career advising with a strong focus on self-awareness and career exploration.  I strive to meet the individual needs of my students, and frequently collaborate with parents, teachers, administrators, and other staff to provide the best possible learning environment for all.  I am looking forward to working at Gateway and I can be contacted anytime if you have questions.

About Me

I was born and raised in Maumee and am a proud graduate of Maumee High School.  After completing my undergraduate degree, I enjoyed living in various parts of the country including Idaho, North Carolina, Colorado and New Jersey.  My husband and I moved back to the Toledo area to raise our twins.  We have 9 year old twin boys, Reid and Blake, and our three year old daughter, Whitney and our new puppy, Rocky.   We are thrilled to be back! Prior to beginning my school counseling career I worked for many years, in several different environments, with “at risk” youth.  My experiences varied from working in a residential treatment center as a case manager and teacher, a classroom assistant in an alternative high school, a homebound instructor and a wilderness therapy instructor.  As much as I love to work, I equally like some down time.  As a family we enjoy spending time doing anything we can outdoors including boating, skiing and wakeboarding in the summer, and in the winter we take every opportunity we can to snowboard/ski.

Education

In 1999, I graduated with a Bachelor of Art in Psychology from Wittenberg University.  I played soccer at Witt and studied abroad in Australia for a semester.  The four years I spent at Wittenberg were by far some of the best years of my life, and I can’t say enough about what a great school Wittenberg is.
I earned my Masters of Art in School Counseling from University of Northern Colorado in 2005.  I thoroughly enjoyed my program and felt honored to be taught by some of the best in the field.

Counseling Experiences

This is my sixteenth year as a school counselor.  Through individual and group counseling as well as classroom guidance lessons, we address personal, social and academic issues for all of my students.  Every year we survey our students to identify what are the current issues and how we can develop our counseling program to address these needs.  Our mission is to meet the needs for all of our students and parents.  We are always available to answer any questions or help with any concerns.  Please don't hesitate to contact me at any time.
